How It Started — 2005

I paid my own way to a conference
everybody told me to turn down.

A trade association in my niche told me they had no budget left for paid speakers and no money for travel. They could give me an unpaid breakout slot. I flew to New York from Tulsa on my own money — and stayed at a Best Western down the street because I couldn’t afford the conference hotel.

The room held 85 people — heads of complaint-handling departments at major consumer brands. I taught the work I knew. At the back of the room I sold copies of the only book I’d ever written, and I ran a raffle: drop your card in the bowl, one free book. I walked out of that room with sixty business cards.

I hired a salesperson on 100% commission because I couldn’t afford a salary. She took every card and ran. Inside two years, that one room had become Coca-Cola, Michelin, Frito-Lay, and McDonald’s.

Years later — after the contracts, after the reputation, after the whole system was built — I would land Best Western itself as a client. The hotel that almost broke me became a company that paid me. That arc is what this program teaches.
And Then, Years Later

I didn’t chase the partnership.
I taught.

I put out a teaching video on YouTube — a story plus a few practical tips. It wasn’t great. I still cringe when I watch it today. But an editor at one of the world’s largest professional learning platforms found me from it, and that single video opened the door to a partnership that has paid out over $1 million over time.

The lesson isn’t make a perfect video. The lesson is share the work. Don’t judge it before you ship it. Don’t polish it past the point of shipping it. You don’t know where it will lead — and the version of you sitting in the editing software is not the right judge of what your work is worth.
